Every year, Slow Food WiSE selects six varieties from an endangered seed catalog, called the Ark of Taste, to package for home gardeners. Growing these heirloom veggies in your garden puts our community one plant closer to protecting rare and delicious flavors.

New to this year’s selection is the Sheepnose Pimento—a pepper that’s primed for cooking, canning, stuffing, and partnering with cheese.

It’s meaty, it’s sweet, and it’s what no spread should be without.

Just ask Martha, proud maker of the namesake artisan cheese spread, Martha’s Pimento Cheese. Those of you who were able to join us for our annual Slow Soup fundraiser (March 3, 2016 at Anodyne) may remember sampling this southern delicacy made with locally sourced cheddar and peppers. If you were as excited about it as we were, we’ll fill you in on a playful picnic recipe you must try before summer’s end: Pimento Cheese Cookies.
