Terra Madre, or Mother Earth in Italian, is a day dedicated to the celebration of local foods. You can join in the celebration by enjoying our locally produced foods or an endangered food item. Like endangered animals, many unique traditional foods are facing the risk of disappearing. In order to slow this process down and highlight these unique food products, Slow Food has established the Ark of Taste. The Ark of Taste is a living catalog of distinct foods that are vanishing. Over 200 foods in the United States are on the Ark of Taste’s list of endangered foods including our Beaver Dam Pepper.
Living in Wisconsin, you have easier access to local foods and producers. Celebrate Terra Madre Day on December 10 by bringing attention to our local food producers and enjoying their foods with your family, friends or community. Here are a few ideas:
- Make a meal featuring local foods for your family and friends, such as a soup supper featuring root vegetables and leftover turkey meat and stock.
- Go out for dinner at a local restaurant supporting local food producers.
- Start planning your vegetable garden for next spring with seeds from the Ark of Taste.
- Learn more about the Ark of Taste and share that knowledge with your family and friends.
