Farmers’ Markets for All!

Fondy Market 2Do you believe everyone has a right to fresh, local food? Registered Dietitian Jennifer Casey does. As the Upper Midwest Regional Governor for Slow Food and Communications Director at Fondy Food Center, Casey is working to increase accessibility to farmers’ markets across Milwaukee’s diverse communities.

As a result, Fondy Food Center recently announced a new partnership with the Milwaukee County Winter Farmer’s Market (MCWFM) that will help Fondy continue to provide equal access to fresh food.

“At first, long time shoppers and fans of the MCWFM won’t notice any changes,” says Casey. “But over time, Fondy expects to diversify the customer base by building relationships with the communities, cultures, and organizations in the neighborhood.”

The immediate effects of this merger may not be tangible, but here’s a few facts that are:

  • More than 53% of families in Fondy’s neighborhood receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP) benefits, and more than 280,000 participate in SNAP in Milwaukee County.
  • Nationwide, farmers markets are only seeing .02% of SNAP money.
  • So far at Fondy Farmers’ Market this season, more than $50,000 in food stamps have been redeemed.
  • Fondy’s Market Match program went through $30,000 in matching Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) vouchers and food stamp coupons in just a few weeks.

“That represents a lot of vegetables to those most in need.” says Casey. And given the new partnership with MCWFM, Fondy will now have a market in operation almost every week of the year, providing good, clean and fair food for all.

Fondy Farmers Market is open 4 days a week through October, and Saturdays only through November.  Saturdays runs from 7am to 3pm. Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays the market runs from 8am to 2pm.  Located at 2200 West Fond du Lac Avenue

The Milwaukee County Winter Farmers Market runs November 7th thru April 9th and is open Saturdays from 9 am to 12:30 pm.  Located at 524 South Layton Boulevard Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the Mitchell Park Domes.
